Patricia Mary Brady was born in Melbourne in 1929 (she took the name of ‘Veronica’ upon joining her religious order, the Loreto Sisters). She matriculated from Loreto Mandeville at the age of fifteen before attending Melbourne University. She went on to complete one of the first PhD degrees on Australian literature, graduating from the University of Toronto in 1969 after finishing a thesis on the writing of Patrick White (submitted under the name of Patricia Mary Brady*).

Veronica was one of the first Australian religious sisters to broadcast on radio and to teach at a secular university. She was a member of the inaugural board of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in the 1980s. She was an authority on Nobel Prize-winning Australian author Patrick White and wrote in South of My Days, a biography of Australian poet Judith Wright which was published in 1998.

A frequent speaker at conferences both in Australia and overseas this publication is a collection of some of these papers. They are published largely as she gave them. Often there was no indication of the date or place of where they were given. In some instances, a reference is made to a significant event in Australian political history which gives an indication of the timing but often there is nothing.

Veronica was on the inaugural Board of what was to become known as ATF Press and served as a member of the Board for six years.
