Description

This book is about a man who was severely burnt in a bushfire in outback Australia. It is about the place where this bush fire occurred and his extensive treatment in the aftermath.

Richard Harvey has been a farmer nearly all his life, has four children (one is deceased), fifteen grandchildren and a steadily increasing number of great grandchildren. He lives in Adelaide, South Australia.

Born in Adelaide in 1926, Richard was educated at Geelong Grammar School in Victoria, Australia, and then at St Peters College in Adelaide, South Australia, where he was Vice Captain of the school in 1943.

Graduating in Agricultural Science in 1947 from the University of Adelaide, he worked for a brief period in wool research funded by the CSIRO (the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, the Australian government agency responsible for scientific research). The research was with Roseworthy Research Centre. Later he helped clear a scrub property north of Bordertown, in South Australia and then, in 1963, took over the ownership and management of Yalkuri, a 16000 acre property on the Narrung Peninsula near the mouth of the Murray River, south of Adelaide. It was there that he was burnt in a bushfire during 1990.

His injuries were severe and he nearly died. This book is the firsthand story of his experience with the fire and his treatment and recovery primarily at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Adelaide, South Australia.
