Description
About the book:
Gustavo Gutiérrez (1928–2024), is considered the ‘father’ of Liberation Theology. He was a Peruvian Catholic philosopher, theologian, and Dominican priest who was one of the founders of Latin American liberation theology. His 1971 book A Theology of Liberation (orinally published in Spanish but translated into many language) is considered pivotal to the formation of liberation theology at large. He held the John Cardinal O’Hara Professorship of Theology at the University of Notre Dame and was a visiting professor at universities in North America and Europe.
Born in Lima, Gutiérrez studied medicine and literature at the National University of San Marcos before deciding to become a priest. He began studying theology at the Theology Faculty of Leuven in Belgium and in Lyon, France. It was there that he became familiar with the works of Dominican theologians Yves Congar and M-D Chenu. He joined the Dominican Order in 1999.
This volume of essays brings together some lesser well known pieces by Gutiérrez.
‘At first glance, he did not look impressive: he was short and walked with a limp. It is reported that when Pope John Paul II first met Gustavo, he exclaimed, ‘Are you really the famous Gustavo?’ One might have expected the founder of Liberation Theology to be rather intimidating! But one could not be with him for long without realising that he was, to the core of his being, a man of God and of the Church.
I first met Gustavo almost forty years ago when he came to teach at Cambridge University for a term. I expected stirring calls to revolution and indignation against the rich. Instead he talked about prayer, which was evidently the foundation of his life. It was his contemplative life that made him strong and which sustained his belief that justice would triumph and that love would overcome hatred.’
