About the book

This book was originally published in French in 1965, and first published in English in 1966. In Jesus Christ Yves Congar writes a series of meditations on Christ as the image of the invisible God, as a man living in history, and as ruler over all creation. Though explicitly Thomistic in their orientation, these meditations are richly biblical as well for, as Congar notes: ‘It is necessary that theologians be kept au courant (well informed) of exegetical research and results. Where they are not, there is a danger of creating an unhealthy situation of “double truth” with each science pursuing its. Own dialogue in ignorance of the rest.’ Not only does this book bear the stamp of a deep understanding of the best in scholastic thought and in biblical research, but it also reflects the mature piety of one of the great theological writers of Catholic theology; because of above all else this is a book of meditations which are aimed at moving the hearts of all readers. ‘The knowledge of God which has been brought by Christ is not a pure knowing. This knowledge is both instruction. And holiness. Not merely information preliminary to salvation, it is salvation already in act.’
